8 Incredible Things To Do In Brisbane: A Locals Guide

Brisbane, the capital of Queensland and one of Australia’s largest cities, is a popular destination for people traveling to the land down under. Due to the city’s lively atmosphere, fun nightlife, and endless attractions, it has been compared to Las Vegas and has even got the nickname “Brisvegas”.

It is also one of Australia’s oldest cities and today it attracts Australian tourists, as well as foreigners. It has so much to offer and will check all your boxes: Delicious food: check. Outdoor activities: check. Clubs: check.

With such a plethora of things to do, how do you choose? I have put together a list of the 8 Most Incredible things to do in Brisbane.

1) Stroll through South Bank

Located in the south of the city is the famous South Bank that runs along the Brisbane River. It’s home to some of Brisbane’s most iconic landmarks like the Brisbane Wheel, The Brisbane Conservatory, and more. You could easily spend an entire day just strolling around the South Bank.

World-renowned for its beautiful green space, fun calendar of events, and incredible dining – South Bank quickly earns a special place in the hearts of those who visit.

Don’t miss these experiences while you’re in the area:

  • Have lunch at The River Bar and Dining Room – an award-winning restaurant that has been rated one of the best in Brisbane by TripAdvisor users. The menu is packed with delicious dishes that are sure to impress—and it’s located right on the water.
  • The South Bank Grand Arbour – a stunning covered walkway lined with beautiful flowers that makes for some great photos.
  • Streets Beach – a man-made swimming hole that looks and feels just like a beach right in the middle of the city
  • Brisbane Wheel- if you aren’t too afraid of heights, this is the perfect way to see panoramic views of the city from one of its iconic landmarks.

2) See a show at Queensland Performing Arts Centre (QPAC)

With over 1 million visitors each year, QPAC is one of Brisbane’s most popular attractions and hosts some of Australia’s biggest performers in theatre, music, comedy, and dance. The building itself was designed by renowned architect Jonathon Oxlade and features an impressive glass facade that illustrates Brisbane’s skyline.

3) Climb Story Bridge


From the top of Brisbane’s Story Bridge, push yourself to the limit and take in the city like never before. Climb this famous bridge and discover a distinctive viewpoint of the city and its surroundings by climbing to the top of Story Bridge.

You can see the surrounding Glass House Mountains, Rim Mountains in the South, and Moreton Bay in the east. The best time to go is a sunset when the sun sinks below the horizon and the city comes to life with lights. The ever-changing Story Bridge multi-colored lighting will cast a warm glow as you descend. A tour takes around two hours

4) Get Out on the River

The Brisbane River runs right through the heart of the city. While staying in Brisbane, it’s impossible to miss it. If you like to be in the great outdoors, then paddle down the river in a kayak near Kangaroo Point Cliffs. There are a few tour options that last around two hours.

Other ways to enjoy the river are the River City Cruises or the hop on/ hop off Brisbane City Cat. The City Cat is a public transport ferry, and it’s a cheap and fast way to get around the city and see all the best places.

5) Explore West End

Brisbane’s West End is a lovely spot to roam and is less than 2 km from the city center. This inner city district is home to a variety of lively cafes, unique stores, and delicious restaurants.

There is lots of street art to be appreciated, and if you want some help finding the best murals, you can sign up for a free Brisbane Greeter tour.

Every Friday & Saturday in West End, you can visit the Boundary Street Markets for some delicious food or go to the Davies Street Market that’s held every weekend for coffee and fresh produce.

6) Catch a Show at The Powerhouse

The Powerhouse is located at New Farm Park in Brisbane. The lovely New Farm park has lots of greenery and tennis courts.

The most popular attraction is the Powerhouse. It was once a power station and has been refurbished as a performing arts and cultural center. You can catch a comedy show, or enjoy one of the restaurants: Bar Alto and Mary Mae’s Bar and Kitchen.

One of the most unique exhibitions here is a beautiful light exhibition called Space Pixels which is inspired by old-school video games. Doesn’t that sound cool?

7) Take a Day Trip to Cedar Creek

Just a 30-minute drive from Brisbane, you’ll find yourself in the middle of the Australian Bushland. Cedar Creek and Mount Glorious are located in the D’Aguilar National Park.

You can go hiking, cool off in the creek, or throw a sausage on the barbie (grill). There are numerous picnic spots next to the creek and a highlight is the Australian animals you can spot in the park like kookaburras, platypi, and wallabies.

8) Visit Shornecliffe Pier

Brisbane has mountains and beaches just a stone’s throw away from the city center. The Shornecliffe pier was restored in 2012 and is a lovely piece of history that has been restored.

This stretch of coast connects Shornecliffe, Brighton, and Sandgate which makes it the perfect beach day destination. Eat fresh seafood, watch windsurfers, and sit at one of the cute cafes overlooking the ocean while enjoying a sunset cocktail.
